Commercial connectivity works best when it is planned alongside the building. For builders and developers, NBN design and applications should be part of early project coordination, with clear responsibilities, complete information and a pathway from design through to connection.

All Digital commercial NBN design and application services

Start with the development and its intended use

Identify the premises and tenancies to be connected, the development stages and the required service dates. Share the current site plan, floor plans and addressing information with the design team. Changes to tenancy layouts or staging can affect the infrastructure and application information, so agree who will communicate revisions.

Confirm the appropriate NBN process for the project early. New commercial premises, work at an existing property and relocation of existing NBN assets can involve different requirements. The project scope should establish which application and design pathway applies.

Coordinate the infrastructure with the building design

Discuss entry routes, telecommunications spaces, pathways and equipment locations with the architect, electrical consultant, civil designer and builder as applicable. Resolve interfaces with other services before construction decisions make changes difficult.

Keep a coordinated drawing set and a record of assumptions and outstanding decisions. Site constraints, access arrangements and changes to the building design should be considered as part of that coordination.

Use the applicable NBN templates and requirements

All Digital prepares commercial NBN designs using the applicable NBN design templates and in compliance with NBN specifications and design guidelines. The design documentation is tailored to the development type and the requirements relevant to the project.

NBN provides design submission guidance and an Assisted Drafting Tool (ADT) template to support design preparation. The applicable templates, submission requirements and current document revisions should be checked for each project. See NBN’s design upload guidance.

Arrange authorised application submission

Agree who will act as the applicant, who can authorise the submission and who will remain the day-to-day project contact. NBN allows an authorised representative of the property developer to be the applicant. All Digital can prepare and submit applications on the client’s behalf where authorised, within the agreed scope.

Gather the required project and applicant information before submission and check that it matches the latest plans. Refer to NBN’s application preparation checklist for the current requirements.

Allow for liaison, review and project coordination

Submitting an application is one stage of the process. Assign responsibility for NBN liaison, responding to information requests, coordinating design revisions and keeping the project team informed. Include those activities in the programme and track outstanding items through regular project updates.

NBN assessment, infrastructure delivery and the eventual retail service connection have their own dependencies. Confirm project-specific requirements and timing early; a submitted application or completed design should not be treated as confirmation that a service is ready for use.

A practical starting checklist

  • Confirm the development address, premises, tenancy arrangement and staging.
  • Provide the latest site and building plans and identify known site constraints.
  • Agree the required connection dates and responsibilities across the project team.
  • Coordinate telecommunications pathways and spaces with other disciplines.
  • Confirm the applicable NBN design templates, specifications and design guidelines.
  • Provide authority for application submission and nominate the ongoing contact.
  • Track NBN queries, revisions and the actions needed before connection.
